Unlike calligraphy, there are really only 2 rules in hand lettering: light pressure on upstrokes (thin lines), more pressure on downstrokes (thicker lines). Everything else, in my opinion, is open for artistic interpretation.

My goal with these practice sheets is not to make you write like me or insist you use the same techniques as I do, but to let you "try on" my style while still developing your own.

The key to hand lettering is lots of practice which can get monotonous, and that is why I really enjoy trying out the styles of other letterers. The movements create muscle memory and the variations hold your interest. The more comfortable you are forming letters, the more naturally your own style will evolve and it will continue to evolve. In fact, mine has changed quite a bit from the time I began creating these practice sheets till I finished and I find that really exciting! I hope you will too.

📱For Procreate use:

Zoom in or out on your page to make the sheets larger or smaller depending on your preference or comfort level.

Directional arrows are on their own layer and can be turned off

Keep your sheets in their own stack to stay organized. To create a new stack in Procreate, drag one file onto another file and drop. A new stack will form and the rest of the pages can be dragged in.

🖨 For Print use:

The PDF can be scaled at printing to make the guides larger or smaller according to your preference or comfort level. The default print size (scale to fit 8.5 x 11") is the perfect size for brush pens.

There are 5 lines included in the guidelines to give you freedom to size your own writing or tool to your own comfort level.

Can be printed as many times as you like on standard printer paper. No need to waste expensive paper on practice!

Can be used with pens, pencils, brush pens, markers, watercolors, etc.

For a smoother surface for your brush pens, lay a sheet of tracing paper over the top of your practice sheet.
